New York--Feb. 16--U.S. consumer attitudes on the economy deteriorated in early February compared with the January readings released on Feb. 2, according to analysts familiar with the private survey released Friday by the University of Michigan.

According to the survey, the reading on early February consumer sentiment was 87.8, compared with 94.7 in January and 98.4 in December. The current economic conditions index was pegged at 103.7, compared with 107.7 in January and 110.5 in December, while the consumer expectations index came in at 77.6, compared with 86.4 in January and 90.7 in December. The University's consumer expectations index is used by the Conference Board in its monthly leading economic indicators report.
The survey of US households used for the index began in 1946. The February 1966 consumer expectations index stood at 100.0. End
