14 February 2001, 18:11  GERMANY DIHT HEAD: GERMAN OUTLOOK GOOD DESPITE U.S. SLOWDOWN

BERLIN (MktNews) - The outlook for German growth is favorable despite concern that the U.S. economic downturn might have a negative effect on eurozone economies, the new president of the German Chambers of Industry and Trade (DIHT), Ludwig Georg Braun said Wednesday. The United States will not have a hard landing, he added. "The German economy continues to be favorable (despite the U.S. slowdown). I do not believe that the U.S economy will significantly weaken, even if growth dipped in the last two quarters," Braun told reporters at the fringes of a press conference. "The tax measures of the U.S. government point to a stabilization and stimulation of the situation (in the United States)," said Braun, who succeeded Hans Peter Stihl as DIHT president Monday. Although Germany's upswing is losing some steam, Braun expressed confidence that the tax cuts which took effect in January would boost domestic expenditure and thus help stimulate growth. "The additional DM20 billion in consumer hands are a further element which will strengthen domestic demand," Braun said.
