14 February 2001, 09:30  Japan Dec current a/c surplus 688.5 bln yen vs 868.6 bln

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - The December current account surplus narrowed to 688.5 bln yen from 868.6 bln a year earlier, the Ministry of Finance said.
The ministry gave the following non-seasonally adjusted details, compared with figures from a year earlier:
Current account surplus - 688.5 bln yen vs 868.6 bln
Trade surplus - 995.0 bln yen vs 1.27 trln
Exports - 4.44 trln yen vs 4.10 trln
Imports - 3.44 trln yen vs 2.84 trln
Goods, service account surplus - 557.5 bln yen vs 755.0 bln
Capital, financial account - outflow 406.8 bln yen vs inflow 1.31 trln

An AFX survey of economists earlier forecast a current account surplus of between 563.3 bln and 1.09 trln yen, with a consensus of around 813 bln.
On a seasonally-adjusted basis, the current account surplus in December was 662.7 bln yen, against 998.0 bln the previous month.
For 2000, the ministry gave the following non-seasonally adjusted details, compared with figures from a year earlier:
Current account surplus - 12.62 trln yen vs 12.17 trln
Trade surplus - 12.58 trln yen vs 14.02 trln
Exports - 49.51 trln yen vs 45.79 trln
Imports - 36.93 trln yen vs 31.78 trln
Goods, service account surplus - 12.58 trln yen vs 14.02 trln
Capital, financial account - outflow 9.13 trln yen vs outflow 5.40 trln
