LONDON (MktNews) - The UK economy in 2000 recorded its best performance in keeping inflation down since comparable records began, surpassing each one of its European Union colleagues for the first time ever, according to European harmosnised data published Tuesday.
Inflation in the UK (as measured by the harmonised index of consumer prices) averaged only 0.8% in 2000. This compares with a European Union average of 2.1% and of 2.3% in the eurozone.
At the other end of the spectrum, Ireland, which was censured Monday by the EU for stimulatory fiscal policy, posted the highest average HICP rate of 5.3%. France achieved an average rate of 1.8% in 2000 while Germany's stood at 2.1% and Italy's was 2.6%.
