Berlin--Jan. 8--German industrial production rose a stronger than expected seasonally adjusted 0.4% in November largely due to unexpected strong expansion of the construction sector, the Finance Ministry announced Monday. * * * The monthly output rise beat many expectations in financial markets. A BridgeNews/Fokus Deutschland survey of economists predicted an increase of 0.2% on month and 4.6% on year. "The latest increase is mainly based on an unexpected strong expansion of the construction production (+ 4.6%)," the ministry said in a statement. The key western German manufacturing sector, however, fell a seasonally adjusted 0.3% from October with a 1.4% decline in non-durable consumer goods leading the downward way. Western German industrial output rose 0.5% while eastern German industrial output was up 1.2%, according to provisional, seasonally adjusted data. In the rounded, 2-month comparison of Nov-Oct with Aug-Sep, German output was down 0.3%. Comparing Oct-Nov with the same 2 months a year ago and adjusted only for working days, German production was up 4.8% compared with expectations of a 4.6% increase. Germany's seasonally adjusted production index measured 114.8 compared with 114.3 the previous month (1995=100). Western German production stood at 114.0 following 113.4 and eastern Germany at 124.0 following 122.5. Western Germany's manufacturing sector index measured 118.2 after 118.6 in October.
