London--Jan. 5--U.K. car dealers enjoyed a bumper Christmas as new car registrations soared to 107,803 units, the highest December figure recorded and a rise of 27.5% from a year ago, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders published on Friday. The SMMT said there was a surge in private sales, up 42.3%. The figures show no sign of the slowdown in consumer spending that the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee has said it wants to see.
