President-elect Bush's strong statement Wednesday on the Federal Reservedecision to cut interest rates should not be considered a precedent, but hemay comment on future action if the situation warrants, a Bush spokesmansaid Thursday. "I would not view yesterday's statement as a precedent,"spokesman Dan Bartlett said in a telephone briefing. "The president-elect willjudge events and make a determination as the situation warrants," he said,noting that Bush may decide to comment on future actions. But Bartlett wasnot definitive on whether the new administration would respect the Fed'sindependence and avoid jawboning monetary policymakers.
