5 January 2001, 10:01 US stocks end lower on profit-taking; NYSE sees record volume
New York--Jan. 4--U.S. stocks ended lower as investors took money off
the table following a powerful rally Wednesday, which was sparked by a
surprise 50-basis-point cut in interest rates. The Nasdaq closed down
50.12, or 1.92%, to 2566.57 and the Dow was down 33.34, or 0.30%, to
10,912.41. The S&P 500 fell 14.28, or 1.06%, to 1333.28. Volume on the New
York Stock Exchange was the heaviest on record, with 2 billion shares
traded for the first time ever.
