5 January 2001, 10:00  Sears to cut jobs, close stores after disappointing December (repeat)

New York--Jan. 4--Sears, Roebuck & Co. (US;S), the largest department store operator in the U.S., said it is shuttering 89 under-performing stores and eliminating 2,400 jobs after a disappointing holiday selling season. The company released its December sales figures Thursday, saying domestic store revenues fell to $4.42 billion from $4.43 billion a year ago. Sales at stores open at least one year dropped 1.1%.
