31 January 2001, 18:10 Japan PM Mori says must put economy on self-sustaining
By Bruce Ellsworth, BridgeNews
Tokyo--Jan. 31--Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori said Wednesday that
putting the Japanese economy on a self-sustaining recovery path is his
first priority and that passage and implementation of the 82.65 trillion
yen fiscal 2001 budget will be "sufficient" to achieve that goal. However,
massive public spending over the past several years has not been enough to
spark a recovery so far and weak consumer spending suggests a
self-sustaining recovery is uncertain.
