U.S. retailers say January saw good activity, especially early on
-- when holiday sales stalled by bad weather were pushed forward into
the New Year. Exceedingly strong gift certificate sales (bought in
December but entering January's ledgers) contributed to the mostly
positive tone for the month, retailers add. What is less clear is
whether the January rebound represents short-lived pentup demand, or
whether predictions for an retail downturn have been premature.
