Economics Minister Fukushiro Nukaga had his resignation accepted by Prime Minister Mori after coming under pressure from his alleged involvement in a bribery scandal. Nukaga is replaced by Taro Aso, who held the post under former prime minister Ryutaro Hashimoto. Finance Minister Kiichi Miyazawa later said the resignation was regrettable, but added there would be no change in policy.
