OKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Supermarket sales in December fell 6.5 pct year-on-year after falling 5.1 pct in November, the Japan Chain Store Association said.
The largest sectoral fall was recorded by clothing, which dropped 11.1 pct, followed by a 9.3 pct fall in household product sales and an 8.1 pct decline in the "others" category.
The only gainer was in services, up 10.6 pct year-on-year.
Retail floor space rose 7.3 pct from a year earlier, the association added.
In 2000, supermarket sales fell 5.1 pct, compared with a fall of 4.7 pct in the previous year.
