24 January 2001, 10:25  Japanese chain store sales decline 6.5% on year in December

Jan. 24--Sales at Japanese chain stores declined for the 25th consecutive month in December, falling 6.5% from a year earlier to 1.704 trillion yen, the Japan Chain Store Association announced Wednesday. The association attributed the on-year slump in December sales to a temporary blip in demand in December 1999 caused by "Y2K" concerns.
