23 January 2001, 15:54  TODAY: ECB VANHALA: CPI FEARS HAVE EASED SINCE MID-DEC

European Central Bank Governing Council member and Bank of Finland Governor Matti Vanhala said in the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore that Euroland inflation could fall more rapidly than many economists expected a month ago. "I can say that our (the ECB's) fears on the price front have eased since mid-December, when we issued a statement speaking of upward price pressures. But he also said that while inflation risks have eased they have not disappeared and it is too soon to say with certainty that the inflation trend has changed.
