23 January 2001, 10:22 BOE's Clementi says US soft-landing the most likely scenario
London--Jan. 22--David Clementi has become the latest G7 central
banker to predict the U.S. economy is still on course for a soft landing.
The Bank of England's deputy governor said the U.S. Federal Reserve rate
cut, falling oil prices, and a weaker dollar should all combine to steer
the U.S. off the rocks of recession. But despite his optimism, he admitted
the balance of risks to the U.K. had shifted over the last couple of
months and said the February meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee
would be "interesting."
