23 January 2001, 09:59 US stocks end lower on earnings worries
New York--Jan. 22--The Nasdaq inched lower as the technology sector
pulled back after two weeks of strong gains and ahead of a slew of
corporate earnings this week. Profit warnings from Dell Computer (US;DELL)
and American Express (US;AXP) added downward pressure but strength in
biotech and retail issues helped mitigate the losses in the broader
market. The Nasdaq closed down 12.47, or 0.45%, to 2757.91 and the Dow was
down 9.35, or 0.09%, to 10,578.24. The S&P 500 was up 0.36, or 0.03%, to
1342.90.
