The euro-dollar and euro-yen were both lower in afternoon trade Friday,as traders continued to lighten positions going into the weekend.Traders were also seen squaring euro positions ahead of the Mondayrelease of German IFO index, a highly watched release, dealers said."This week has been very whippy, with little direction," bemoaned onetrader. After overnight comments by Bank of Japan Governor MasaruHayami saying the yen was too weak, but refusing to elaborate, tradershave been reluctant to sell the yen too aggressively, in spite of anincreasingly negative economic outlook by analysts. Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics viewed Hayami'srequests to the BOJ staff to study ways to improve liquidity as openingthe door for big changes in monetary policy.
