18 January 2001, 10:37 Brown urges EU to speed up economic reform to offset U.S. slowdown
LONDON (AFX) - The UK Chancellor Gordon Brown will tomorrow call on
European Union ministers to accelerate the restructuring of capital,
labour and product markets as a contribution to sustaining global
growth in the face of a U.S. slowdown, The Financial Times reported.
"Europe must share the burden of generating both stability and
growth," the chancellor said in an interview with the Financial Times.
"I think Europe is well placed to play a bigger contribution in
world growth but we can do even better if we push ahead with economic
reform," Brown said.
Brown will also push for a liberalisation of energy markets by the
end of 2003, the newspaper said.
