ECB LIEBSCHER STILL SEES SOME EMU INFLATIONARY RISKS
European Central Bank Governing Council member and Austrian Central Bank
Governor Klaus Liebscher said, "over the medium term, there are still
elements of upward risks to price stability which warrant close
monitoring." This is a verbatim repetition of remarks in the ECB monthly
bulletin that have prompted some observers to argue that the ECB's tone
has softened and it is preparing for a rate cut. Liebscher also played
down price stability risks in Europe, arguing that inflation rates
remain low by international standards.
