16 January 2001, 09:58 MIYAZAWA: MONITORING FOREX MARKET MOVEMENT CAREFULLY
TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Finance Minister Kiichi Miyazawa said he is
looking at the movements in the foreign exchange market carefully.
"I don't think the market is disturbed by the current movement in
the yen but I am looking at the market movement carefully as I am not
sure whether (the fall in the yen) is a temporary move," he said.
Miyazawa did not comment directly on proposals to support the
equity market.
"I do not know about the details," he said, adding that he welcomes
discussions among the Liberal Democratic Party to improve regulation of
the market.
Miyazawa said he is uncertain whether public money will be used to
help revive the stockmarket.
"My view as finance minister and the LDP's view are different," he
said, without elaborating.
