Paris--Jan. 12--The French economy grew at a 0.6% pace in the third
quarter of the year, slower than a preliminary 0.7% reading given by the
government in November. Final GDP data for the period issued by national
statistics institute INSEE Friday showed a sharp upward revision to
imports and business fixed investment, and downward revisions in household
fixed investment and inventories.

Third-quarter GDP was up 3.0% on year, originally reported up 3.1%.
Based on the third-quarter growth rate, Insee calculated that French
GDP growth would be 2.9% for all of 2000 if growth were zero for the
remaining one quarter. This figure was reported in the preliminary third
quarter data as 3.0%, and is slightly lower than Bank of France estimates
of 3.0% 2000 GDP and the French Finance Ministry projection of 3.1%
growth.
Second-quarter growth was reported up at +0.8%.
